Snorkeling in Bali: Where to Go and Why

You don't need a certification to see most of what makes Bali's reefs famous. Good snorkeling here ranges from calm, shallow coral gardens perfect for kids to open-water swims alongside manta rays for confident swimmers.

Snorkeling over coral reef in Bali

Padang Bai's Blue Lagoon: Easiest Start

Sheltered, shallow, and sandy-bottomed, Blue Lagoon is where we send first-timers and families. The coral bommies sit close to the surface, visibility is usually excellent, and green turtles are a common sight cruising the shallows.

Nusa Penida: For Confident Swimmers

Manta Point and Crystal Bay are the draw here — the chance to snorkel just metres above manta rays gliding through a cleaning station. Conditions are more open water than Blue Lagoon, with some current and swell possible, so we recommend it for swimmers who are comfortable in open sea rather than absolute beginners.

Amed and Tulamben: Calm and Shallow

Both stretches offer gentle, shore-accessible coral slopes that work well for a relaxed snorkel, and Tulamben's USAT Liberty wreck sits shallow enough that snorkelers can see its silhouette and resident fish life from the surface.

What a Trip Includes

  • Gear: mask, snorkel, fins, and a life jacket if you want the extra buoyancy — all provided.
  • Guides: every trip goes out with a guide who knows current conditions and won't take non-swimmers into open water sites.
  • Not a strong swimmer? Tell us in advance — we'll steer you toward Blue Lagoon or a sheltered Amed spot instead of Nusa Penida.
