Small Class Sizes Get Mentioned Most
The most repeated piece of feedback is about pacing — students who were nervous about a specific skill (mask removal is the classic one) appreciated not being rushed to keep up with a large group. We keep instructor-to-student ratios low specifically because of this.
The Open Water Dives Being "Real" Diving
Because we run certification dives at Tulamben and Padang Bai rather than a featureless training patch, students often say their first certified dives already felt like proper diving — coral, fish life, and in Tulamben's case, a real shipwreck — not just a skills checklist in open water.
Where Students Say They Struggled
Honestly, most first-time struggles are the same across any Open Water course anywhere: ear equalisation and mask-clearing anxiety. Neither is unusual, and both improve fast with practice in confined water before the open water dives.
What This Means for You
If you're nervous going in, that's normal, and it's exactly what the confined water sessions are for. Tell your instructor directly if a skill feels uncomfortable — pacing is flexible, and there's no benefit to rushing a step you're not ready for.
